IMD warns of very heavy rainfall at a few places for the next three day
Heavy rains lashed parts of Telangana and the capital city on Thursday evening. Weatherman said the rains were due to a cyclonic circulation over east-central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal, located over northwest Bay of Bengal and extending up to mid-tropospheric level.
“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and neigh- bouring areas during the next 24 hours. It is likely to become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours and move westnorthwestwards across Odisha, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
It has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the next three days, saying: “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapally Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Bhadradri
Kothagudem and Mahabubabad and heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places in Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sirsilla Mulugu, Warangal (Rural), Warangal (Urban) and Janagaon districts. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana.”
As of 10.30pm on Thursday, the highest rainfall in the city was registered at Macha Bollarum followed by Madhapur and Jeedimetla. These areas had received 35mm,
32.3mm, and 32.3mm of rainfall, respectively.
In the state, the highest rainfall for the same period was recorded at Menoor, Madnur, and Narayankhed. The Telangana state development planning society (TSDPS) said they recorded rainfalls of
129.3 mm, 119.8 mm and
111.5mm respectively in these areas. While it was raining in parts of the city, another storm was brewing on social media. Residents reminisced how the rains had wreaked havoc last year. ‘Alert! Alert… Hyderabad people… The rains are coming... Last year, the whole city was submerged in rainwater .... More than 100 lives had been lost.
Colonies are submerged in rain water for months. Roads are waterlogged and look like rivers. Govt must take preventive steps,” said K. Venkatesh on twitter.
Netizens also brought up issues of power disruption in the city due to the rains. Some of them even tweeted to minister K.T. Ramarao, saying,” Dear TSSPDCL, first rain of the season and as I already said, electricity power is off as expected ....... How many days do we have to see this kind of situation in Hyderabad? This is a very basic requirement,” tweeted Naresh Khenwar.
