Kerala man hides his ‘lover’ in a room for 10 years

- GILVESTER ASSARY I DC

In a story that can beat any blockbuster, a Kerala youth hid his lover in his house for ten long years.

The parents and siblings of the man who were staying in the same house, are yet to come to terms with what had happened. The story sounded totally unbelievable to the local residents.

The incident happened in Ayilur, about 30 km from Palakkad town.

With Covid-19 pandemic and frequent lockdown making means of livelihood extremely difficult, Rahman the hero of the story, decided to end his lover Sajitha’s decade long “room isolation”.

Rahman was 24 and Sajitha 18 when they decided to elope. Since the couple belonged to different religions, their families were totally opposed to the relationship.

Recollects Rahman, “We were into two years courtship when Sajitha suddenly left her home. Though I got some money, it was taken by family delivering a blow to my plans to take a house on rent. I still can’t believe how we spent ten years.”

Rahman who is an electrician, even connected the door handle with electric wire and fixed an automatic lock. He passed minor electric current through the handle to prevent anyone from opening the door.

RAHMAN WAS 24 and Sajitha 18 when they decided to elope. Since the couple belonged to different religions, their families were totally opposed to the relationship.

He claims that Sajitha didn’t fall ill even once in last 10 years. For mild fever and headache he used to give paracetamol tablets.

Rahman never used to take up work after sunset in order to be with his wife. Sajitha said she can’t believe that her ten years were spent in a room.

“My husband took full care. He shared food mainly breakfast and dinner, stocked bread and biscuits. I never felt any difficulty. I used to watch TV using headphones and that’s how I spent time in his absence,” she said.

Since there was no attached bathroom, the washroom was used mainly during night and early morning.

Rahman was forced to end his wife’s room confinement after his family started suspecting his strange behaviour.

“I was actually upset by Covid pandemic. But my parents thought some evil spirit had entered my body. They even took me to sorcerers,” he said.

Since there was a missing case, both were produced in a local court and let off after they conveyed their willingness to stay together.
