The state government on Tuesday said it has decided to allow single screen movie theatres to collect parking fees from motorists, with immediate effect.

In its orders on the subject, the government, however, said that the existing orders on no parking fee will stay in place for multiplexes and movie screens located in commercial complexes.

The municipal administration and urban development department, in GO No. 63, some years back had made it mandatory to produce movie tickets to avoid parking fees in single screen theatres. The department, in the GO issued on March 20, 2018, had said that parking will be free for first 30 minutes and no parking fee would be collected for a vehicle between 30 minutes and an hour if the person produces a bill to any amount in proof of having done shopping in the respective shopping mall or multiplex.

On Tuesday, in GO No 121, the department said it had come to the notice of the government that in case of standalone cinema theatres, a lot of vehicles were being parked in the parking area which belong to people other than cinema goers, and that maintaining and safety of vehicles was becoming an issue. After careful consideration of the matter, the government said it was permitting owners of standalone cinema theatres to collect parking fees from the persons who park the vehicle in their premises.
