Abhishek, others booked in Tripura
FIR: He stopped cops from discharging duty
The Tripura police on Wednesday lodged a suo moto FIR booking two Trinamul Congress MPs including West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and a cabinet colleague of TMC supremo among six party leaders for allegedly preventing senior cops from discharging their official duty.
The case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code was initiated following a complaint by inspector Manoranjan Deb Barma posted as officer-in-charge of the Khowai police station, on the six TMC leaders’ siege at Khowai police station recently.
Apart from Mr Banerjee, Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen, state education minister Bratya Basu, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh and two former MLAs of Tripura, Subal Bhowmik and Prakash Das, who are in
TMC now, stand accused in the FIR.
Mr Deb Barma claimed that the six TMC leaders verbally abused additional superintendent of police Rajib Sengupta and Sub Divisional Police Officer (Khowai) Rajib Sutradhar during their protest against the arrest of 12 party leaders.
While Mr Banerjee was not available for comments, Ms Sen however rebutted the allegations against them. She said, “We did nothing illegal there. Our protest was peaceful. BJP is actually scared of Trinamul Congress be it here, other states or in parliament. That’s why it is misusing the administration against us. But we have faith in the judiciary.”
Echoing her, Mr Basu said, “There was no obstruction to public duty. Had it been so, we could have ensured the release of our arrested party workers. But that was not done. We only requested the police for treatment of the injured. In filing the FIR, the police proved of working on the orders of the BJP government there.”
