Curbs on Tank Bund annoy commuters

- NAVEEN KUMAR I DC HYDERABAD, DEC. 26

People are fuming at the traffic restrictions imposed on Tank Bund even after cancellation of 'Sunday Funday' for

Covid-19.

Traffic police were seen enforcing diversions from 5 pm to 10 pm. This was aimed at enabling the public to walk on the stretch without the fear of vehicles plying on the road, said a traffic police official, adding that those citing emergency issues were sent across.

However, commuters faced traffic congestion while taking a detour and found the restrictions pointless. “It takes me about 20 minutes to reach SD Road from Basheerbagh but because of the pointless restrictions on Tank Bund, it takes around

45 minutes,” said Lakshmi P., a private employee.

“Curbing traffic even when there is no event is resulting in more people on the road. How is it helping in controlling the spread of Covid? The government has asked the public to avoid gatherings and then we have such situations,” said Abhiskek Dubey, a software employee from Ranigunj. Manikanta, a cab driver from Malakpet, said that multiple roadblocks around the Tank Bund circle were causing inconvenience for the passengers as well as drivers.

“People travelling across the twin cities have to cross the Tank Bund stretch or have to take the longer route via Lakdikapul. However, these restrictions are causing jams at other junctions,” he said.

‘Ek Shyam-Charminar Ke Naam’ programme in Old City was also cancelled amid new fears.

Principal secretary of MA&UD Arvind Kumar said that the programmes would be revived once the situation returns to normalcy.
