Govt says only 5,825 posts in all prisons against capacity of 7,270
A division bench of Telangana High Court, comprising Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili, directed the state government to issue notification for filling up vacant posts in the prisons department, within two months, if it has not been issued already.
The bench was dealing with a suo motu taken up PIL based on Supreme Court’s directions to high courts to know the ground realities about the inhuman conditions in prisons in their respective jurisdictions and pass necessary orders to resolve issues.
Accordingly, the High Court, with the assistance of legal services authority ascertained the loopholes and human rights violations in jails in the state and sought explanation from the government and the prisons department.
The government filed a reply affidavit stating that there were just 5,825 persons across all prisons against the capacity of 7,270. In order to fill the existing vacancies, various recruitment notifications have been issued, it pointed out.
The Court, in the considered opinion, directed an early filling up of vacant posts. It also called for strict compliance of the orders of the Supreme Court in W.P (Civil) No. 406 of 2013 regarding undertial prisons, overcrowding in jails, women prisoners and their child, open prisons and skill development training to prisoners.
