100 bird species found in rare walk
About 100 species of birds, including some rare ones, were sighted during the firstof-its-kind birding walk conducted in Jannaram division of Kawal Tiger Reserve over the weekend.
Although the forest department received over 300 requests, only 61 participants were taken inside the reserve on both days, with the primary objective to sight birds.
The rare birds that were sighted included grey-headed fish eagle, crested treeswift, crested serpent eagle and Eurasian wigeon. Also seen were mammals like spotted deer, nilgai, sambar and Indian gaur.
Forest divisional officer of Jannaram S. Madhava Rao said that the best place for sighting birds inside the reserve was Bisonkunta, thanks to a large water body that is surrounded by trees. Rao said that encouraged by the good response the event had evoked, they would organise more such birding walks.
Principal chief conservator of forests R. Sobha and several senior officials participated in the bird walk on Sunday.
