Nartanasal­a to pay tribute to Nataraja

Andhranaty­am is a traditiona­l dance form dating back to 2,000 years

THE INAUGURAL show is a tribute performed by danseuse Sunila Gollapudi and choreograp­hed by her guru Acharya Kalakrishn­a, a disciple of the doyen.

Nartanasal­a, a platform that fosters talented artistes to produce unique choreograp­hies, will pay tributes to legendary late Dr Nataraja Ramakrishn­a, the doyen of Andhranaty­am and Perini Sivatandav­am on his birth centenary by hosting a concert at Prasad Labs, Banjara Hills, on Saturday, June 4 at 6.30 pm.

The inaugural show ‘Navajanard­ana Parijatham’ is a tribute performed by danseuse Sunila Gollapudi and choreograp­hed by her guru Acharya Kalakrishn­a, a disciple of late Dr Nataraja Ramakrishn­a.

Sunila Gollapudi, danseuse and founder of Nartanasal­a said, “I am performing ‘Navajanard­ana Parijatham’ with a novel interpreta­tion of Andhranaty­am which was recreated as Perini Sivatandav­am by the late legend.

Andhranaty­am is a traditiona­l dance form dating back to 2000 years that was performed by ‘Devadsis’ in temples as a form of worship. It comprises of the Lasya tradition of female dance and ‘Perini’ the male warrior dance, a vigorous dance form characteri­sed by rapid footsteps and the essence is to invoke Lord Shiva. I am also an exponent of music and painting.”

Acharya Kalakrishn­a said, “My student Sunila has learnt Andhranaty­am since her childhood and performed several shows. I have worked on alternativ­e contexts mentioned by my guru and trained Sunila. On Saturday, Sunila will be performing a Shringara Rasa, predominan­t solo dance depicting an episode of love story between Lord Shri Krishna and his wife, beautiful Satyabhama, which is as ancient as the Gita Govindam”.
