Modi, Scholz discuss global developments
Modi meets his counterparts from Indonesia, S. Africa
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a series of bilateral meetings on Monday with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the G7 meeting at Schloss Elmau in Germany.
While Germany is the host of the G7, South Africa and Indonesia are attending as guest countries along with India.
In talks with the German Chancellor who had as host of the G7 meeting invited Modi to participate as a special invitee, both leaders “emphasised the need to take forward their Green and sustainable development partnership” and discussed issues like climate action, provision of climate financing and technology transfer.

also agreed on the need to further deepen trade, investment and people-to-people ties, New Delhi said in a statement, adding that the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments that is expected to have included the Ukraine crisis.
Greater coordination in international bodies, particularly in the context of India’s forthcoming G20 presidency, was also discussed, New Delhi said.
In talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the two sides agreed to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia.
Both leaders also discussed ways to boost connectivity and business linkages, New Delhi said, adding that they discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and investment.
In a statement, the MEA said, “Prime Minister congratulated President Widodo on Indonesia’s ongoing G20 presidency. Discussions took place on India’s forthcoming G20 presidency. They also exchanged views on global and regional issues of mutual interest.”
Regarding the meeting between Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the Summit, New Delhi said, “Both leaders reviewed the progress made in bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly following the signing of the Strategic Programme of Cooperation in 2019.
They expressed satisfaction at the progress achieved in defence, education and agriculture sectors, and reiterated the need for further deepening bilateral cooperation in areas like trade and investment, food security, defence, pharmaceuticals, digital financial inclusion, skill development, insurance, health and people to people contacts.”
Modi also met his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G7 Summit and the two leaders took stock of the India-canada friendship and discussed ways to further strengthen it across various sectors.
This is also the first meeting between the two leaders since Trudeau, who had backed the agitating farmers in India, had said that Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protests, and had expressed concern over the situation.
