Tight vigil to thwart extremist movement

Police track movements of suspects ahead of BJP meet

- MOULI MAREEDU | DC HYDERABAD, JULY 1

The Telangana police held a review with all wings of the state police to take necessary measures to thwart the possible movement of extremist and antisocial elements across the borders. The review meeting comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit and movement of VVIPS in Hyderabad.

Sources said the Counter Intelligence Cell officials, a specialised wing to combat terror and extremism, have started tracking the movements of suspects after receiving credible information about potential threats from anti-social elements and extremist groups. This includes women who are listed as suspects at various locations throughout the city and state. At the review meeting, officials from the Counter Intelligence Cell have instructed their staff and police officials to keep tabs on the anti-social elements living in districts and submit reports on a daily basis.

Accordingly, the senior police officials have

instructed the Superintendent of Police (SPS) to step up border checkpoint security and take action against suspects. The SPS and police commissioners issued orders in all districts to strictly enforce Section 30 of the Police Act that prohibits large gatherings in public places.

“Around 18 youngsters, who were rescued after attempting to join ISIS and other extremist groups, are under surveillance. A team of police officers are in touch with their family members. With exchange operations taking place in neighbouring states between police and banned Maoist parties, the state police have set up special checkpoints at border locations to counter the attempts of anti-social elements,” sources said.

In Hyderabad, the police have stepped up security in the southern zone and deployed special squads in vulnerable locations. Senior police officers have also been on high alert in crucial locations like Bhainsa, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Khammam, and other places.
