I’ve met some very interesting men in my life, and the only reason I didn’t get married is because they were a letdown. My children had nothing to do with it. My children were never involved; in fact, they have been extremely gracious —Sushmita Sen,

In a new interview, beauty queen-turnedactor Sushmita Sen spoke with actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna about her life and career.

Twinkle hosts regular conversations with respected names from various fields on the Tweak India Youtube channel in a series called The Icons.

She asked Sushmita about her love life in her interview — Sushmita has famously remained unmarried and broken stereotypes when she became an adoptive single mother at the age of 24 back in the day.

Twinkle enquired as to how she had managed to be so open about her relationships over the years, particularly at a time when the men in the industry pretended to be ‘virgins.’

Sushmita said, “Khud ko khoya, toh kya paaya (If you lose yourself, then who are you)? That’s been my standard belief in life. I just wanted to be honest and speak my mind, and learn how to say it gracefully… Be it plastic surgery, men in my life, relationships, married men, whatever you think is a bad thing, it exists, get over it.”

Twinkle also asked Sushmita if she ever felt getting married would be difficult after adopting Renee and Alisah.

“Fortunately, I’ve met some very interesting men in my life, and the only reason I didn’t get married is because they were a letdown,” she continued, “My children had nothing to do with it. My children were never involved; in fact, they have been extremely gracious. They have welcomed people into my life with open arms, treating everyone with equal love and respect. It’s absolutely stunning to watch. I was on the verge of getting married three times. God saved me three times.”
