Women’s health a priority, says Governor

Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundarara­jan stressed the importance of mental and physical health of women and adolescent girls and the need to raise awareness among them for their wellbeing.

The Governor was addressing a round table conference organised at Raj Bhavan with a delegation of doctors from various specialtie­s. The conference was chaired by Karuna Gopal, president, Foundation for Futuristic Cities.

“Senior doctors play a significan­t role in not only evolving people-friendly policies but also in strict implementa­tion of those policies. It is important to

create more awareness on the health services provided by the government to bring about a change in the health-seeking behaviour

of women. It is necessary to improve the accessibil­ity of health services for women in rural and urban areas by operating mobile

medical units,” the Governor said.

Dr Soundarara­jan said that focus had to be brought on kidney ailments, heart diseases, intestine and gastric problems and orthopaedi­c issues which are found more in women than in men. The Governor said that the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme benefited women due to its extensive coverage of diseases. Stressed the importance of yoga , physical exercise and nutritious traditiona­l food in girls from childhood.

Karuna Gopal, addressing the conference, pointed out that a global report in 2013 had said that India did not have statics of womenrelat­ed diseases statistics. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking at specific policies in the interest of well-being of women. Therefore we have an important role to play to bring out policies that can strengthen women,” she said.

“With the G20 presidency and India emerging as a voice of the global South, it is of critical importance to come up with policies that uplift and bring women of the country at the forefront,” Gopal said.

Dr Alwal Reddy, president, Orthopedic Associatio­n; Dr Amaresh Rao, cardiothor­acic surgeon and head of department, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences; Dr Shanta Kumari, former president, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecolog­ist Societies of India; Dr Purnima Nagaraja, psychiatri­st and psychother­apist, and other senior doctors attended the conference.
