Pay and play: Criminal case is booked on club secretary

The Charminar Police have registered a case against Mahboob Ahmed, secretary of Charminar Cricket Club, and his son Adnan Ahmed, a cricketer, on charges of collecting bribe from an aspiring cricketer to make him play in league matches conducted by the Hyderabad Cricket Associatio­n.

The cricketer lodged a complaint with the police late on Monday night and a case was registered under sections 406, 420 and 506 of the IPC and investigat­ion has begun, Charminar police said.

The 25-year-old player from Neredmet alleged that as he was aspiring to play in the leagues organised by HCA in an attempt to get selected for the Hyderabad sides playing First Class

Ahmed, the complainan­t transferre­d money on three occasions to Ahmed’s son through UPI transfer and also in cash.

Despite making the total payment, Ahmed dropped the complainan­t from 20-20 matches. In the three-day league, he was included in only one match. When the complainan­t questioned him about being dropped and demanded return of his money, he was asked to wait and told that he would be included in the team for the next season. However, the complainan­t did not get an opportunit­y in the 20232024 season too. He attended the selection trials of another club and got selected based on merit and without any charges.

As he continued to pursue Ahmed for his money he was threatened with dire consequenc­es.
