Priyamvada Natarajan, a theoretical astrophysicist, posted on X, “Its such an honor to be on the #TIME100 list with my remarkable colleague @Virusesimmunity whose farreaching work on COVID19 and the immune system has been guiding us as we emerge from the COVID-19 epidemic @TIME so stoked to see that scientists are seen as influential people (sic).”
Natarajan is also the author of the highly regarded book Mapping the Heavens: Radical Scientific Ideas That Reveal the Cosmos.
In the Time story, American astrophysicist Shep Doeleman said of Natarajan, “Priya has a knack for pursuing the most creative research, and as a fellow astronomer, I am always inspired by her work. Her latest result takes us one step closer to understanding our cosmic beginnings.”
Her theory that these black holes at the centres of distinct galaxies formed from the collapse of gas clouds was confirmed by observations with the James Webb Space Telescope.
Born in Coimbatore, Natarajan studied in New Delhi, and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is Joseph S. and Sophia S. Fruton Professor and Chair of Astronomy, as well as a physics professor in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS).
