RISHABHASH!

- DEEPIKA DAS | DC

Delhi Capitals returned to winning ways but not before giving cold feet as the Rishabh Pant-led side eked out a four-run win over Gujarat Titans on the last ball at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday night.

This is the second win for Delhi over GT in eight days one that helped DC swap the sixth spot with Gujarat, who are now seventh. Batting first, Delhi rode on steady knocks from Pant and Axar Patel to post a competitive 224/4.

In reply, GT lost captain Shubman Gill cheaply but Wriddhiman Saha (39 in 25 balls) and Sai Sudarshan (65, 39b, 7x4, 2x6) stitched an 87-run stand for the second wicket to help the side to 98/2 at the half-way stage. Kuldeep though broke the partnership as Saha’s shot landed straight into Axar’s hands at mid-off. Within three balls Azmatullah Omarzai also returned to the pavilion, much to Delhi’s joy.

Gill, playing his 100th match of the IPL, misjudged the shot and was caught by Patel at the slip off Anrich Nortje. David Miller (55 in 23 balls, 6x4, 3x6) held fort and led the chase with his accurate and sub-lime shots. Then, a late surge from Rashid Khan (21, 11b, 3x4, 1x6) raised Gujarat’s hopes but only just as they finished at 220/8.

Rasikh Salam, who was named the impact player, was the pick of the bowlers for the winners as he returned with figures of 3/44.

Earlier, Pant’s 88 off 44 balls with five fours and eight sixes was the highlight of the Delhi’s innings. After a shaky start (44 for 3), Pant and Patel’s (66, 43b, 5x4, 4x6) put on 113 for the fourth wicket to help take Delhi to 158/3. Their entertaining knocks were studded with a flurry of sixes and fours.

After Axar fell to Noor Ahmad, Pant was well supported by Tristan Stubbs, whose quickfire 26 off 7 balls helped Delhi cross the 200 mark.

Experienced Mohit Sharma proved to be the costliest bowler for the Titans, leaking 72 runs in four overs while Sandeep Warrier (3/15) was most successful.

Opener Prithvi Shaw (11, 7b, 2x4) struck four at deep extra cover on the very first ball with Jake Fraser-mcgurk (23, 14b, 2x4, 2x6) at the other end. Azmatullah Omarzai opened the bowling but after leaking 10 runs in the opening over, Sandeep Warrier was introduced and his accurate line and length proved too hot to handle for Delhi batters. 4-0-35-0, Noor Ahmad 3-0-36-1, Mohit Sharma 4-0-73-0, Shahrukh Khan 1-0-80, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore 1-0-22-0.
