Ride The Sea Breeze

Tamil Nadu

Mahabalipuram, or Mahabs to the weekend riders from Chennai, is the seventh century seaport, and second capital of the Pallava kings. But if it’s known for wonderful stone carvings and shore temple, it is also a fun place, a sort of south Indian Goa with plenty of sun, sand and seafood. The village is listed as a World Heritage Site, and is a reputed centre for stone carving with local artisans continuing the tradition. Mahabs is a two-hour drive from Chennai, down the scenic East Coast Road, and is an ideal getaway from the capital. There’s plenty to do on this lovely stretch of the eastern coast. You can take a tour of all the seaside monuments, marvelling at the craftsmanship that created these temples, chariots, statues and murals, all out of stone. Or, kick back and enjoy the sun and surf. There are lots of seaside resorts where you can swim for the day, drink and tuck into some excellent seafood. For an adrenaline rush, sign up for surfing lessons.
