The Great Stupa Sanchi
WHY VISIT? The UNESCO World Heritage Site is the oldest stone structure in India.
Walled within four magnificent carved gateways called torana, The Great Stupa at Sanchi was built by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka after he embraced Buddhism, remorseful of the Kalinga War. The 3rd-century BC stupa consists of the relics of Lord Buddha, and is also home to smaller structures, such as the Gupta Temple, one of the earliest examples of temple architecture.
GETTING THERE: Sanchi is located in central India’s Madhya Pradesh. Direct flights operate between the nearest major town, Bhopal and New Delhi.
