BIKANER CAMEL FESTIVAL, RAJASTHAN

-

An intrinsic part of the harsh deserts of Rajasthan, the majestic camels, also known as the ‘Ships of the Desert,’ have historically been held in high regard by the people of Bikaner, who believe life in the Thar would not be possible without them. Given their prominent position in every Republic Day parade, it is only fitting that the camels are celebrated in a two-day festival in January. The festival begins with a procession of camels—bedecked in a colourful profusion of necklaces, anklets, and bridles—that starts from Junagarh Fort and ends at the Dr. Karni Singh Stadium. The festival features folk dance and music performances, a special fire dance, and a series of camel races and games, along with regional delicacies such as camel milk sweets and camel milk tea—all of which culminates in a spectacular display of fireworks.
