3,000 flee as wildfires rage in New Zealand

Sydney: Strong winds on Sun­day are ex­pected to fan for­est fires that have been burn­ing for a week through New Zealand’s South Is­land, forc­ing thou­sands of peo­ple from their homes, with more res­i­dents ex­pected to flee, of­fi­cials said. The Pi­geon Val­ley fire cov­ers 5,700 acres with a 25 km perime­ter, NZ Civil De­fence said in a state­ment on its web­site. No deaths have been re­ported and only one home de­stroyed.

Paris: A “yel­low vest” demon­stra­tor lost his hand dur­ing clashes with po­lice out­side the main par­lia­ment build­ing in Paris on Satur­day, wit­nesses said, dur­ing a 13th week­end of antigov­ern­ment protests across France. De­spite a drop in num­bers from the mas­sive turnouts of the first demon­stra­tions in Novem­ber, tens of thou­sands still turned out in cities across the coun­try to protest against French Pres­i­dent Em­manuel Macron’s poli­cies.
