BAI MU 02 DAILY NEWS & ANALYSIS MUMBAI I I MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2019 www.dnaindia.com twitter.com/dna epaper.dnaindia.com facebook.com/dnaindia I I I Residents of Kalyan constituency demands for better rail connectivity MAHARASHTRA Varun Singh to commuters’ woes,” said Kapil Tiwari, a resident of Kalyan east. When contacted former MP of the constituency Anand Paranjpe, he pointed out a list of problems that he thinks Dr Shrikant Shinde has failed to work upon. “Considering the ever-increasing passenger rush, increasing the number of trains is the need for the hour. The fifth and sixth line between Mumbra and Kalyan is yet to begin, the Kalyan terminus hasn’t come up yet. There are only 16 services of the 15-car coach between Kalyan and CSMT, which isn’t sufficient. Forget rail, even the roads are congested. Work on promised bridges to improve connectivity is yet to begin,” he said. According to Paranjpe, the sitting MP got elected only because of the Modi wave, and it won’t be a cakewalk for him this time. On his candidature, he said that the decision will be taken by the party’s parliamentary committee. Repeated attempts to contact Shrikant Shinde got us no response. Gopal Landge, senior Sena leader from the area said, “Anand Paranjpe spends most of his time in his residence at Thane, but never in the constituency. On the other hand, our MP has carried out a lot of work, he is surely going to win the forthcoming elections.” Kalyan Lok Sabha Constituency that was carved out of the erstwhile Thane Lok Sabha constituency in 2008 has been represented by Shiv Sena in the Lok Sabha since its formation. While its first MP was Anand Paranjpe who won on a Sena ticket, he was defeated in the 2014 general elections by Dr Shrikant Shinde. Paranjpe had shifted to the Nationalist Congress Party, which fielded him in 2014. [email protected] Nestled around 38km from the financial district, Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency has flourished mostly as home to bedroom communities. They travel down south for their professional needs and come home only to sleep. Thus, the local rail network is the lifeline for many commuters in the constituency. However, the mere mention of its name makes people shudder. Getting on and off local trains is no less than waging a war! “It becomes a mad scramble to get on and off the train, especially during peak hours when everybody is travelling to work. It’s a case of survival of the fittest. We expect our elected representatives to solve our problems related to the local suburban train services and make our lives easier,” said Kailash Rajwadkar, a media professional from Kalyan east. While the issue of rail connectivity overpowers everything else, residents also feel the need for transition of the constituency from a bedroom community to a commercial area with more job opportunities. “Our constituency has very fewer job opportunities in the corporate world, which is why people move down south looking for jobs. Our MP should work to increase the area’s employment opportunities,” said Ashish Awasthi, a resident of Ulhasnagar. Traffic congestion is another problem the constituents of Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde are troubled with. “Roads have become increasingly congested. A patri pool, which was of vital importance for east-west connectivity, was demolished for reconstruction last year. Work on the bridge is yet to start and has added immensly KALYAN PERFORMANCE OF MPS 8,25,000 42.94% 34.24% 5,44,000 alyan Lok Sabha Constituency comprises of six assembly seats — Mumbra-kalwa, Dombivali, Kalyan East, Kalyan Rural, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath.
