Woman enters well, dies after falling 40 feet
Water scarcity in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman, who fell into a well in search of water. The incident took place at Malewadi in Mahagaon tehsil Monday evening. Vimal Rathod had entered the half-dry well, the official said. While trying to descend further, she slipped and fell 40 feet on the rocky surface and died on the spot. After the incident, villagers of Malewadi staged a protest at Gunjphata and demanded drinking water for the village.
Three held with cannabis at Kalwa
Three persons have been arrested for alleged possession of 4 kg cannabis worth Rs 8 lakh at Kalwa. Acting on a tip-off, crime branch officials nabbed Samir Alam Mohammad Ismail Shaikh and Venkat Kale on June 8, said DCP, Crime, Deepak Deoraj. Police also seized a twowheeler and Rs 53,000 cash from their possession. Based on interrogation, police arrested Aslam Ansari, the alleged supplier of the contraband, from Navi Mumbai. The trio have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Foreign cigarettes worth crores seized
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized 6.73 lakh cigarette sticks from a south Mumbai godown and arrested one person. The team has found 60 cartons containing various foreign brands, including Benson&hedges, Gudang Garam, Marlbro, 555, Paris, which were recovered and seized under provisions of the Customs Act.
