First-year medical students forced to tonsure heads in UP
Lucknow: Despite a ban on ragging, senior medical students of the Motilal Nehru Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad forced over 100 juniors to tonsure their heads. They also beat up all those who disobeyed their orders.
The first year female students were also not spared. They were asked to apply oil in their scalps and support braids while attending their classes.
As a part of the ragging procees, the first year students were also ordered to pay respect to sweepers and other Class IV employees of the college by bowing in front of them. Reportedly, those students who had refused to follow their seniors’ order, were thrashed. Two of the first year students were severely beaten up by their seniors when they objected to ragging and threatened to lodge a complaint against them.
“I refused to follow their orders. I was beaten up and not allowed to attend my classes. They warned us not to report the incident to the anti-ragging cell in the college or the punishment would be more severe,” said a first year student, who was one of the students who were forced to shave off their heads.
“The college administration knows about the whole incident but has not initiated any action against seniors. They are asking us to file a written complaint,” said another first year student.
“They have threatened to ruin our careers if we filed any complaint to the college authorities,” said a first year female student.
Ironically, the college administration had set-up a seven-member Anti-Ragging Cell with the Principal of the colleges, Dr SP Singh, as one of its members. They cell is supposed to put a check on such indicdents at the campus.
“We have not yet received any complaint of ragging from the first year students. The administration will certainly initiate an action against seniors if found guilty,” said Dr Vatshala Mishra, Acting Principal of the medical college.
