New Delhi: A day after Calcutta High Court denied permission to BJP to hold a yatra in Cooch Behar, party president Amit Shah lashed out at the state government, saying the democratic process is being “strangulated” by “blatant misuse of power”.

“Mamata Banerjee government is strangulating democracy. Because she is scared of the rise of the BJP in the state,” Shah said on Friday while addressing the media at the party’s central office in New Delhi. On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court had denied the party permission to hold a rally in northern West Bengal, expressing “apprehensions of violence”.

“Mamata is having sleepless nights after BJP’s success in the panchayat elections,” he said. “I understand her concern. But stopping the yatra won’t help. We will definitely hold all three yatras. No one can stop us. The yatra has been postponed, not cancelled.”

The Cooch Behar yatra is the first among three yatras planned by the BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections. The other two are slotted for Kakdwip in southern Bengal and Namkhana in South 24 Parganas district.

West Bengal is one of the party’s unconquered territories. According to party sources, BJP has targeted to win at least 22 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
