Patan­jali to teach yoga in city schools

Af­ter ask­ing schools to teach yoga to their stu­dents on the 21st of ev­ery month, the ed­u­ca­tion depart­ment has is­sued an­other cir­cu­lar on Thurs­day, ask­ing city- based schools to con­tact Patan­jali Yog Samiti Mum­bai as ac­cord­ing to the gov­ern­ment res­o­lu­tion Patan­jali Yog Samiti has been per­mit­ted to teach Yoga.

The cir­cu­lar have been is­sued by the North Zone ed­u­ca­tion depart­ment for the schools to con- duct Yoga and Pranayam ses­sions for which the per­mis­sion have been given to Patan­jali Yog Samiti. Uday Nare, teacher of Han­sraj Mo­rarji Pub­lic School in And­heri, said: “The schools wel­come the move. The schools have been asked to co­op­er­ate with the Patan­jali Yog Samiti. But it is not clear whether the schools will have to pay them.”

An­other prin­ci­pal of a BMC school in North Zone said: “We have not yet re­ceived the cir­cu­lar by ed­u­ca­tion depart­ment. But if the Samiti will have to be paid then it is bet­ter that our teach­ers, who are teach­ing phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion, con­tinue teach­ing yoga to our stu­dents.”

How­ever, de­spite the or­ders, schools are still not clear whether teach­ing Yoga is com­pul­sory or op­tional.
