BMC to reopen Dadar’s Olympic- sized pool
Reeling under persistent pressure from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena ( MNS), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) will reopen an Olympic- sized swimming pool in Dadar soon. The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Olympic ( MGMO) pool, one of the oldest in the city, had been shut for the last one year due to water shortage. It is slated to be reopened after August 21.
The Raj Thackeray- led party had been tailing the issue since August 2015, when the pool was first shut down by the civic body due to a severe water shortage in the city. The civicrun pool opposite the Shivaji Park ground has a membership of more than 15,000 swimmers.
In 2011, the pool was decked up to Olympic standards. It, however, found itself in the news for all the wrong reasons. “The pool was shut due to water shortage in the city. The situation compounded further as several leaks were spotted in the pool, coupled with the dismal maintenance work carried out by the contractor,” Sandeep Deshpande, MNS group leader in the BMC, said. He had been raising the pool issue in the Standing Committee as well as General House meetings time and again.
He castigated the BMC for its apathy to the 10- lane swimming pool and a neighbouring cluster of three more pools – one being 16ft deep, built exclu- sively for diving, another a recreational pool and the third shallow pool for kids.
“Our main contention continues to be regarding the contractor appointed for the pool building and maintenance. Even after the pathetic construction and the failure to maintain pool standards, the BMC did not blacklist the contractor. While we welcome the decision to reopen the pool for public, the party will continue to monitor its daily operations and will take feedback from members,” Deshpande added.
Meanwhile, a senior BMC official corroborated the news and said the four pools were being filled with water currently, and a team was checking the water- filtration system. “The pool will welcome swimmers within a week’s time,” the officer said.
