BMC demolishes 21 illegal structures in Bandra
In an attempt to free some space for pedestrians, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) on Saturday demolished 21 structures erected illegally around the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra.
This was the civic body’s third demolition drive in the western suburban region of Bandra in the last two months.
According to a senior civic official, “The demolition drive was necessary as the illegal structures have been there for a very long time. We had received a lot of complaints regarding the matter. Notices were issued to own- ers of the 21 structures to vacate the area. They, however, failed to vacate the premises by the deadline. So, we had to go and on carry out the demolition.”
Most structures were shops and tea- stalls operating from the footpath enveloping the court premise, s near the Western Express Highway ( WEH).
“The stall owners were objecting. With the help of the local police, however, we were able to disperse the crowd and carry out the drive,” the officer added.
In July year, the civic body had razed 25 illegally constructed residential structures in the same area. Most structures sported around two to three storeys.
