Wary of water wrath, AIADMK for early polls
Chennai: With Chennai and adjoining districts facing worst ever drinking water shortage since 2004, the ruling AIADMK has urged the Election Commission to hold the Lok Sabha polls in the first or second phase to avoid facing the wrath of the voters.
A memorandum in this regard has been submitted by senior AIADMK leaders M Thambidurai and P Venugopal to the EC on Thursday. “We have submitted a memorandum to the EC seeking to hold the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu in the first phase itself,” Venugopal told DNA.
Usually, LS polls would be held in five to six phases across the country in April and May but in Tamil Nadu, the polls would be held in a single phase in April end or May. Considering the failed northeast monsoon in north Tamil Nadu, particularly Chennai, the state is likely to face acute drinking water shortage during the peak summer month of May.
Chennai city faces worst ever water scarcity since 2004 with the four reservoirs that supply drinking water has almost dried up with a combined storage of less than one-tenth of its total capacity.
