Basel. The Sankt Jakobshalle's extension
The competition to modernise and extend the St Jakobshalle arena near Basel which hosts the Swiss city’s most important sporting events, has been won by architectural practice Berrel Berrel Kräutler Degelo who convinced the jury of the architectural competition with their proposal to redesign the layout of the building. In their design, the main entrance has been relocated and an urban piazza created that leads visitors inside the building through a new gateway. The ambitious nature of the construction is also reflected in the 6.5 m long glazed facade that isolates the atrium from the outside and for which have been used transoms and mullions from the VISS TVS curtain walling system by Jansen. The profiles are made from steel – the best material when it comes to supporting, as in this case, a high load with large intervals between the supports.
