Muoto is a Finnish word that stands for ‘form’. Gilles Delalex was coming back from Finland, where he was doing his Ph.D, when he and his team had to adopt a name quickly for their very first public competition. Setting up an office was not initially their intention. They were just a group of young friends who, despite different study backgrounds, worked together with their own ‘Manifesto’. At the beginning, their business was nonprofit and any money earned in competitions was stored in an account to be shared among them later. They grew slowly with no pressure to succeed. Informality is key, even in communications within the office. Project reviews are handled by pinning drawings onto the wall to understand their development. The office works mainly on public competitions which Gilles sees as a solid way of building an office up although difficult, at the same time, given the selection process. He highlights a scenario that is changing with clients shifting more towards semi-public joint ventures on public land using private investment. Andrea Caputo
