A team of top bu­reau­crats, con­sti­tuted by Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi to sug­gest ideas on health, san­i­ta­tion and ur­ban devel­op­ment, has rec­om­mended that a fat tax be charged on junk food. The 11-mem­ber group rec­om­mended the kim­po­si­tion of ad­di­tional taxes on foods with added sugar, salt and sat­u­rated fatsy. The rec­om­men­da­tion could be ac­cepted if the prime min­is­ter clears it. Down To Earth had sup­ported the im­po­si­tion of a fat tax five years ago. CSE de­cided to in­ves­ti­gate the food peo­ple love to eat. The lab­o­ra­tory checked for fats, carbs, salt and trans fats.
