E-waste rising dangerously in East, Southeast Asia
study shows that the volume of electronic waste is rising sharply across East and Southeast Asia as higher incomes allow millions of people to buy smartphones and other gadgets. The report notes that e-waste in the region increased by 63 per cent between 2010 and 2015, the period of the study. China's generation of e-waste more than doubled during the period, while Hong Kong was the worst offender, with each resident generating 21.7 kg of e-waste, the highest in Asia. Singapore and Taiwan generated 19 kg per person in 2015. The increasing volumes are a cause for concern for many countries that lack infrastructure for environmentally sound e-waste management, notes the UN report.
