Time for electoral reforms
Richard Mahapatra's column "Year of electors" (1-15 January, 2018) rightly highlights the challenges 74 countries will face in 2018 as they go to elections. In India, on the other hand, the electoral democracy seems to have created more problems than it has solved since 1952. The first and foremost is the caste-based reservation in government jobs and facilities. Secondly, regional political parties blackmail the Union government at the time of Rajya Sabha elections and get away with their unreasonable demands even at the cost of national unity. In view of all this and more, Indian democracy needs some bold electoral reforms. L R SHARMA HIMACHAL PRADESH
