Trump lowers fuel norm, autogiants fret

-

Stockholm syndrome in their relationship to environmentalists or the fear of public backlash, US automaker giants who have been lobbying for diluting Obama-era fuel efficiency and emission standards have urged the Trump administration to go slow on its assault on the current standards. President Donald Trump plans to rollback the escalating efficiency standards for new cars and light trucks from 50 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2025 and freeze it at 41.7 mpg by 2020. But California and a dozen other states, which represent 43 per cent of US' auto market and have stringent emission standards, have moved court against the proposal. Fearing being caught in a massive legal battle, automaker executives recently met Trump and said they are not asking for a rollback.
