Manage river flow to end water woes

- K G VYAS FORMER ADVISOR, RAJIV GANDHI WATERSHED MISSION, MADHYA PRADESH

Water sector development in our country is confined to storing and managing floodwater through dams. While adopting this approach, the sustainability of non-monsoon flow is neglected by planners and policymakers. This has resulted in serious and unprecedented depletion of river flow. If we continue to depend on floodwaters to address our water concerns, we will soon plunge into deeper trouble. It is time we address the sustainability of non-monsoon flow and undertake the revival of rivers. Management and revival of non-monsoon flow is different from floodwater management, but if achieved, many problems of the water sector will be resolved.
