Ahmedabad isn’t among India’s cleanest
This is in reference to “A perfect zero” (1-15 December, 2019). In Ahmedabad, municipal authorities do not seem to enforce any rule. Single-use plastic is banned in Ahmedabad, but one can see vendors selling it openly, right under the nose of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).The dump hill at Pirana is growing, threatening those who live nearby. But it hardly matters to anyone. A few months ago, a rule was imposed to separate wet and dry waste, but the AMC collection workers didn’t know about it.The residents too don’t care. I think Down To Earth needs to cover the city that houses Gandhiji’s Sabarmati Ashram as one of India’s most unclean. AMC workers burn leaves openly. A couple of years ago, while garbage was being burnt, part of the historical Dandi bridge got destroyed by fire. Protected forested areas in the city are given to private parties to open nurseries. Even industries that dump waste in the Sabarmati river go unpunished. Can somebody bring this to notice.
