Locust attack sparks conspiracy theories
This is in reference to “Farm raiders” (1-15 February, 2020). Locust infestations have always happened. Affected countries in Africa and Asia are setting up early warning systems and preventive mechanisms to stop locust plagues from developing and spreading. Wherever these early warning systems function, locusts are controlled before they attain their gregarious state—the ability to form swarms to fly rapidly across great distances—and crops are, therefore, protected. However, for many, no infestation means no buyers of pesticides and related equipment. So, let us keep an eye out for why this surge in locust infestations has happened in proportions not attributable to ecological factors. Maybe corporate interests are at play!
