Ukraine saw major floods in early June due to a massive breach in a dam located in the southern part of the country, currently occupied by Russian forces.The release of waters flooded agricultural lands and human settlements, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said the breach had released hundreds of tonnes of industrial lubricants into the Dnipro river along which the dam was lying. It is still unclear how the breach occurred.
Wildfires in
Canada intensified throughout June,leading to the country seeing its worst fire season in recent history,according to media reports. The fires began in March this year and by June 19 had affected 11 provinces, burning nearly 40,000 sq km and displacing more than 100,000 people.The fires also deteriorated air quality as smoke emanated across Canada and some cities in neighbouring US.
Almost 60
per cent of voters in Switzerland backed a new climate bill aimed at combating glacial melt and requiring the country to become carbon neutral by 2050.The bill had already been passed in the country's parliament, but right-wing legislators had refused to back it as the new law would involve reducing dependence on imported oil and gas in lieu of greener, more homegrown alternatives, likely increasing energy prices.
Bangladesh completely
shut down its largest coal-based power plant in the first week of June,due to a shortage of coal in the country.The 1,320-megawatt government-run Payra Power Plant had stopped operations at its units since May,as the country faced a cash crunch to import coal from Indonesia.Regions across the country saw power cuts amid summer heatwaves.
