Innovation Should Be Creative, not Technological in Essence
Hitesh Kumar, Founder, Artillume tells us how softwares and new technologies can help the creative professionals. In this changing world, today’s channel community can devise new strategies to promote and make available these softwares and technologies to the creative community HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO COMBINE ART AND TECHNOLOGY?
In India people are still trying to struggle to understand the techniques and technology behind creative processes in modern times. So we started working to create an awareness of this field among the people. We spent a few months to prepare ourselves. We tested different models that could work well. We took it to the event companies and they liked the idea of illumined art projection mapping. We tried to build the infrastructure and backing for our projection mapping shows. Then i realised that there were many people who wanted to create things which looked like projection mapping but they were basically videos projected on the wall. So we decided to create an awareness so that this particular technique could combine creativity and technology and evolve along those lines. Once we completed more than 50 projection mapping shows, we decided to involve more people in this activity, who could share our work. We also realised that new media doesn’t have the grammar which the conventional creative fields have. To encourage the formation of a grammar, we had to do a lot more experimentation.
New media artists don’t have enough opportunities, spaces and resources to experiment and showcase their work.
HOW IS THE TECHNOLOGICAL GRAPH OF THIS FIELD?
The technology behind art illumination and project mapping is very expensive. Further, the artists have to learn the techniques to decipher this particular field. We want to create both of these scenarios. Many new corporate houses and work spaces want newer engagements. They want to use technology for creative work in their spaces. We have offered our experiments with art and technology for some corporate houses. There are opportunities in the corporate sector, where they want to use technology as part of the overall experience. Nowadays even small children are using smartphones and their experiences are linked to the new technologies. Hence, the creative arena needs to incorporate these new technologies. These technological understandings have to be in integrated into the spatial designs.
We have to be constantly innovative and support innovation. But this innovation should not be technological in its essence. It has to be creative and experiential.
TECHNOLOGY SHOULD BE A TOOL TO SUPPORT THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Yes. What we get out of it can be multi-sectoral. It can have multiple applications in different use cases. It will be easier for the corporate houses to devise new things. PC Quest was where my journey started.
It was the first magazine that inspired me. It was the first techmagazine that came out with CDs of the introduction of 3D Studio Max, which later became Autodesk. For the first time its videos were released by PC Quest. I saw those videos. And I decided that this was something that I had to do. I continued looking for opportunities where I could get the software or tutorials. I chose my workplaces depending upon how much Internet access I had, so that I could download the tutorials. I have preserved that PC Quest CD. I still have that CD with me as I wanted to keep it as a memento that began my journey. Otherwise I was selected for Indian Railways, but I quit my job to devote my time to this field.
WHAT OTHER SOFTWARES ARE YOU USING?
Now we use all the industry standard softwares. We still have our film and radio section running. We have a digital agency as well. We have started a new project called Varaha which is digitising the art works from the museums and archaeological sites and creating an online art gallery and standalone kiosks which the visitors can experience at close range and get the historical information about these art works. We use photogeometry softwares, laser-scanning softwares, 3D modelling softwares. We have created a front-end software and a back-end repository and database software. There is a VR solution as well. All of these combined together creates one complete solution.
Suppose I have already created paintings or sculptures and i want to use your softwares and other technological innovations to make my work accessible to the new generation
Traditional artists need to learn new ways of using modern technology. This is why our platform is essential. A painter who comes to our seminar will know what programming can do and they will start thinking about how they can use the software codes to create new art. Our platform can be used to generate 3D image, augmented image and so on. We create an accessibility for the creative professionals to be able to use these softwares and other new technology.
