BDOs to move SHRC against Tiruvannamalai Collector
TIRUVANNAMALAI: Officials of the Rural Development have decided to move the State Human Rights Commission on Friday following ‘censure’ of BDOs by Tiruvannamalai Collector KS Kandasamy over allotment of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
The officials’ decision to move SHRC was conveyed to presspersons at Tiruvannamalai by association’s state general secretary Pari
The move comes after a WhatsApp message from the Collector to the BDOs group on Friday warning that those officials who failed to allot PMAY houses expeditiously before Monday would be suspended. When asked about the ongoing issue around the PMAY, the collector said that he had received numerous complaints from beneficiaries regarding the delay in allotment of houses.
Kandasamy told DT Next that when he asked for beneficiaries’ details, it was delayed and BDOs attributed the delay to the inclusion of names of dead persons or those who had moved out of the town on the beneficiaries’ list.
However, the association’s general secretary claimed that the Collector was bothered more about earning a good name at national level by implementing the scheme in the district and refused to listen to the various glitches in the scheme when BDOs informed him during review meetings. He also said that in many cases, beneficiaries were unable to construct houses or had to halt the work after laying the foundation due to insufficient amount granted under the scheme.
To show opposition to the Collector’s warning, members of the association wore black badges and reported to work on Monday. It is expected that explanatory meetings would be held at BDO office in the district on Tuesday.
