CHENNAI: All students studying in State-run schools will get enhanced fire safety lessons this year with the Tamil Nadu government bringing out fresh instructions to all the institutions.

A circular, issued by Directorate of School Education, on Tuesday said that all schools were instructed to allocate an additional ten minutes during morning prayer to create awareness among the students on celebrating Deepavali safely.

Teachers were also told to advise students during the class session on bursting crackers in a safe manner.

The circular further said that the school management could rope in fire safety officers to give a demonstration to the students on the fire safety aspects.

In addition, students will also be advised by the health officials how to treat burn injuries, which accidently occurs while bursting crackers, especially on the Diwali day, since most of the children are not aware of what to apply on the burn injury.

The official statement said that pamphlets will also be circulated to the students highlighting safety aspects to handle the crackers.

The circular advised the students on the type of clothes they should wear at the time of bursting crackers.

Accordingly, students should also ensure to keep adequate water near them at the time of bursting crackers.

It stated that children should avoid burning crackers in crowded places and not create nuisance to the public. Similarly, children should also avoid bursting crackers near hospitals and clinics where patients are admitted.

The circular added that parents should also ensure that the crackers are not kept near inflammable items like petrol and kerosene. School managements were asked to send reports on the fire safety awareness done to the students.

The circular said that due to awareness created by the teachers last year, the number of students getting injured was very less while bursting crackers.
