Corporation intensifies raids on shops to seize banned plastic items
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has intensified its raids to seize banned one-time use plastic items from shops. According to a statement, 463 commercial establishments in Valasaravakkam zone were raided in the past three days. “Among them, banned plastic products were found in 60 shops,” the statement said. The civic body added that around 67 kg of plastics were seized and collected Rs 54,200 in penalty from the shop owners. Meanwhile, 28,997 shops in Valasaravakkam zone were raided and a total of Rs 9.54 lakh collected in penalty between January 1 and November 20. During the same period, the civic body had raided more than 3.42 lakh commercial establishments. “Around 308 tonnes of banned plastic items were seized and Rs 79.84 lakh collected as fine from the violators,” the release stated.
