YouTube debuts its Pop-Up Space in Chennai

-

CHENNAI: Continuing to invest and support the growing regional language creator community in India, YouTube debuted its first YouTube Pop-Up Space in Chennai. The three-day initiative provided an opportunity to over 400 budding YouTube creators across Tamil Nadu to get free access to production equipment and sets, to produce original content for their YouTube channels.

Satya Raghavan, Director, Content Partnerships, YouTube in India said, “We are impressed by the depth and diversity of content we see from Tamil Nadu. In 2018, we had only 30 Tamil creators who had crossed the 1 million subscriber mark. But in less than one year, we have over 94 Tamil creators crossing this milestone. Adding to this number, over 1,250 Tamil channels have now crossed 100K subscribers. Through initiatives like Pop-Up and Next-Up, we want to continue to invest in the growth of creators and handhold more aspiring ones to learn from the creator community and get access to all the professional equipment, sets and help them move to the next level.”

YouTube’s Pop-up Space in Chennai comprised three sets – a Music setup, Food studio and a Lifestyle set. Over the course of three days, emerging creators got a chance to attend workshops on storytelling, content strategy, production, and branding. The year 2019 witnessed milestones for Tamil content on YouTube – for instance, Dhanush’s music video of Rowdy Baby went viral across the globe with over 680 mn views. New trends include the emergence of Tamil gaming channels, miniature village cooking and Carnatic music maestros starting out on YouTube. YouTube currently has 265 mn monthly active users, and it is expected that there will be as many as 500 mn online video subscribers by 2020.
