TN records 11% excess rainfall at 40.3 cm

CHENNAI: The State recorded about 11 per cent excess rainfall (40.3 cm) against the actual rainfall of 36.3 cm over the past week till Monday. Rainfall deficit of 15 per cent in the city further reduced to 8 per cent after the rainfall on Monday.

As per the Regional Meteorolog­ical Center, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at places over south Tamil Nadu, coastal Tamil Nadu and at a few places over north Tamil Nadu for the next five days. Isolated places in the State are also likely to experience thundersto­rms with lightning in various areas.

Meanwhile, the city is likely to remain cloudy with light to moderate light rainfall in some areas in the next 48 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatur­es are likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius respective­ly.

RMC also issued a warning for fishermen stating that low-pressure area over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadwee­p area experience­d on Sunday, now lies over Lakshadwee­p area and adjoining southeast Arabian sea. It is also likely to become more marked during the next 24 hrs.

For Monday and Tuesday, the weather agency predicted that squally weather with wind speeds reaching up to 40 to 50 kmph is likely to prevail over southeast Arabian sea and adjoining Lakshadwee­p and off Kerala-Karnataka coast and 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail over southwest Arabian sea and adjoining equatorial Indian ocean. On Wednesday, similar conditions would prevail with wind speeds at 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southwest Arabian sea. Fishermen are advised to not venture into these areas.

On Monday, the maximum temperatur­es in Nungambakk­am were 28.6 degrees Celsius, while Meenambakk­am recorded 28.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatur­es recorded were 23.1 degrees Celsius and 23.2 degrees Celsius at Nungambakk­am and Meenambakk­am respective­ly.
