8 killed in 3 road accidents in city, Tiruvallur

CHENNAI: As many as eight people, including four of a family, were killed in three different accidents in Tiruvallur and Chennai on Thursday night and Friday morning.

In the first incident, a family of four was killed in a road accident reported at Gumudipond­i when the car in which they were travelling collided with a truck. The police noted that Yashwanth (30), a native of Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, had come by car to Chennai Airport to drop his parents who were flying to the USA.

With Yashwanth, his wife Anuselvi (28), their son Riyancheri (8), Yashwanth’s sister Vijayalaks­hmi (34), her children Rithvika (12) and Namitha (14) had also travelled to Chennai. Around 3 am on Friday, after dropping his parents, Yashwanth was returning to Ongole. When the car was near Gummidipoo­ndi on the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway, a truck carrying milk made a sudden stop and the car rammed the truck. In the impact, Yashwanth and Rithvika suffered injuries, while all the others died on the spot. The Gummidipoo­ndi police registered a case and sent the bodies for post-mortem examinatio­n.

In another mishap in Ponneri, two men — Sathish Kumar (25) and his friend Guansekhar­an (29) — travelling on a bike died after their vehicle collided with a truck laden with coal. Sathish was traveling to Ponneri to drop Gunasekara­n, who works with him in the thermal power plant in Minjur, when the mishap happened. The Ponneri police registered a case.

In the third accident, two of three friends riding triples died after their bike hit a wall at Avadi on Thursday night. According to the police, Pradeep, Siva and Manikandan from Red Hills were traveling to Avadi along Vandalur-Minjur 400 feet Outer Ring Road on Thursday night. While Siva was driving, Pradeep and Manikandan were riding pillion.

When they were at Palavedu in Avadi, Siva lost control of the motorbike and ran into a roadside wall after. In the impact, Siva and Pradeep died on the spot while Manikandan escaped with minor injuries, the Poonamalle­e Traffic police said.
