Chennai Corpn releases electoral roll; drastic dip in first-time voters

CHENNAI: The number of first-time voters in the electoral list for Chennai has come down drasticall­y to 19,000 from 43,000 that was registered in 2019.

As per the final revised electoral roll released on Friday by Greater Chennai Corporatio­n Commission­er and District Election Officer G Prakash, only 19,686 first-time voters (18 years of age) have been enrolled their names in the voters’ list.

During 2019, as many as 43,829 first-time voters had enrolled their names in the electoral roll and in 2018, the number of first-time voters was 35,194.

According to the final electoral roll for 2020, there are 39,46,792 voters in the Chennai district that has 16 assembly constituen­cies. The trend of female voters outnumberi­ng male voters continued.

“Of the total voters in the district, 20,02,223 are women and 19,43,556 are men. There are 1,013 transgende­r voters in the city, which is 81 more than the previous year,” said the Commission­er.

In the draft voters list released in December, the city had 38,88,673 voters. Of the 65,215 people who applied for the inclusion of their names in the list, 59,905 names were included. However, the Corporatio­n has removed 1,786 names from the list.

Of the 16 assembly constituen­cies in the district, RK Nagar constituen­cy has 102 transgende­r voters, which is the highest.

Velachery has the highest number of voters with 3,06,347 voters. “Harbour assembly constituen­cy has the least number of voters. The constituen­cy has only 1,73,337 voters,” Prakash added.

A Chennai Corporatio­n press release said that the voters can verify the final electoral list by visiting www.elections.tn.gov. in and also at the respective zonal offices.
