Mobile snatchers are back; doctor, scribe among victims

CHENNAI: Even as the lockdown restrictio­ns are being eased in a phased manner, offences being reported in the city are on the rise. Two incidents of mobile snatching were reported from the city on Thursday, while Kasimedu police arrested eight persons who were robbing visitors to the fish market.

A bike-borne duo snatched the mobile phone of a doctor when the was out on a morning walk in Kilpauk on Thursday. The victim Raja, a doctor with Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, was walking near the house when two men on a bike without helmet snatched his phone and fled. Based on his complaint, Kilpauk police registered a case and have launched a hunt for the suspects with the help of CCTV footage.

In another incident, a bike-borne duo snatched away the mobile phone of a 30-year-old man on MTH Road in Villivakka­m. K Moideen of Villivakka­m, who works for a news magazine, was waiting for his friend near his house when two men on a bike snatched his phone and sped away. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered.

Meanwhile, Kasimedu Fishing Harbour police arrested eight persons for robbing visitors to the fishing harbour. A few days ago, a bike-borne duo had attacked one Kannan and robbed him of cash and mobile phone. Based on his complaint, police registered a case and secured three suspects — Ramesh, Sarath and Premkumar — with the help of CCTV footage. Based on their inputs, the main accused Kulla Karthik and his accomplice­s Iviya, Santhosh, Vasanth and Prem were secured on Wednesday night. All eight suspects were remanded in judicial custody.
