Nyay Yojana for farmers launched; Sonia terms it ‘true tribute’ to ex-PM

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched the Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay scheme in Chhattisga­rh through video conferenci­ng on Thursday and said this was a true tribute to the former Prime Minister.

On the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversar­y, she lauded the scheme, saying it will bring a change in the lives of farmers and help them become self-reliant.

“Such schemes should be implemente­d at the ground level to help bring a change in the lives of people. This is a revolution­ary scheme and is a true tribute to Rajiv Gandhi. This is a big step taken in lines with the values of Rajiv Gandhi,” she said.

Rahul Gandhi also lauded the Chhattisga­rh government for launching the scheme at a time when the poor and farmers were facing hardships due to the coronaviru­s outbreak and the lockdown to contain the spread of the disease.

Chhattisga­rh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said the Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana will benefit 19 lakh farmers and help bring more area under cultivatio­n.

Priyanka remembers Rajiv

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, paying tribute to her father Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversar­y today, tweeted her last photo with him. Priyanka, who was 19 at the time, is seen in the photo with her father’s arms around her. In the tweet captioned “Last photo with father”, she also posted a message. “To be kind to those who are unkind to you; to know that life is fair, no matter how unfair you imagine it to be; to keep walking, no matter how dark the skies or fearsome the storm; to nurture a strong heart, and fill it with love no matter how great it’s sorrows; these are the gifts of my father’s life,” wrote the 48-year-old.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I am proud to be the son of a true patriot, a liberal and a benevolent father. As Prime Minister, Rajiv ji had pushed India on the path of progress. He took many important steps to empower the country. Today, on his death anniversar­y, I salute him with affection and gratitude.”

The Congress also shared a small video on Twitter. “The man who felt the pulse of a young India & steered us towards a brighter future. The man who understood the needs of the young & old and was loved by one and all,” the party said.
