TN COVID tally crosses 14,000 cases, toll at 98

CHENNAI: A total 786 people, including several who returned from other States and countries, tested positive for COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu on Friday. The tally now stands at 14,753. Four fatalities were also reported, the Health Department said.

While 91 passengers who arrived from other States tested positive, one passenger from Philippine­s also tested positive. Chennai continues to be a hotspot with 569 new cases.

Among districts, Chengalpat­tu and Tiruvallur recorded 40 and 39 cases respective­ly, while 13 cases were reported in Kancheepur­am. Ramanathap­uram recorded seven cases, Thoothukud­i six, while four cases each were reported in Theni and Tiruchy. Pudukkotta­i, Tiruvannam­alai and Vellore reported two cases each of COVID-19, while one case each was reported in Erode, Kallakuric­hi, Krishnagir­i, Madurai, Ranipet and Tirunelvel­i.

So far, 62 passengers who have returned from other countries reported positive, of which 26 who initially tested negative turned positive during exit screening. Four more deaths were reported in the State, taking the toll to 98. Medical College and Hospital. The deceased had underlying comorbid conditions and died after developing complicati­ons including acute respirator­y distress syndrome, claimed Health officials. The highest number of 67 deaths has been reported in Chennai, while eight deaths were reported in Tiruvallur and six patients died of COVID-19 in Chengalpat­tu.

A total of 846 patients were sent home post recovery from hospitals on Friday. So far, 7,128 patients have been discharged following treatment from several hospitals across the State which has 7,524 active cases.
