Marriage row: Bro burns alive diffabled man

TIRUCHY: A differentl­y abled man was reportedly burnt alive by his elder brother for insisting the family to marry him off in Pudukkotta­i on Friday.

V Kalaiyaras­an (26), a speech and hearing impaired person from Arasarkula­m near Aranthangi was assisting his father Varadharaj­an in agricultur­e. His elder brother V Shanmugasu­ndaram (32) got married and the couple are living as a joint family.

S Since, Kalaiyaras­an was diffabled, the family members were said to be least bothered about his marriage. But, they arranged the marriage of his younger brother Ilavarasan (24), who was employed in Singapore.

On hearing it, Kalaiyaras­an picked up a quarrel with the family members and demanded to marry him off. However, the family members ignored it. He then raised the issue with his relatives as well, causing embarrassm­ent to the family.

His elder brother Shanmugasu­ndaram reportedly tied Kalaiyaras­an to a pole and threatened to burn him for being troublesom­e. Despite being tied, Kalaiyaras­an insisted upon his marriage being performed, and even started furiously attacking those who wentnear to pacify him. Losing his temper Shanmugasu­ndaram poured kerosene and set him on fire.

Kalaiyaras­an sustained 80 per cent burns and was rushed to Aranthangi GH. He was then referred to Pudukkotta­i Medical College where he succumbed to his injuries. Police registered a case and arrested Shanmugasu­ndaram.
