CITY CROSSES 2,000 MARK IN SINGLE DAY TALLY 1ST TIME; 3,949 CASES IN TN

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu continued to witness a surge in thenumber of COVID-19 cases, as the State recorded 3,949 cases on Monday,including 3,841 indigenous cases.

The tally in the State has crossed 86,224, of which Chennai accounts for about 66 per cent of the total. The city reported 2,167 fresh cases, reporting more than 54 per cent of the total cases in the State on Monday alone. With this, thecapital city’s count has jumped to 55,969.

The State currently has 37,331 active cases, of which 21,861 (more than 58 per cent) are in Chennai. The percentage of total active cases in the State is reducing as several other districts, including Madurai,Vellore, Tiruvannam­alai and Tiruchy continued to report more cases.

As many as 62 more deaths were reported on Monday, of which18 deaths were in private hospitals and 44 of them in government hospitals. However,

as many as 11 people with no comorbidit­ies were reported dead on Monday. A 23-year-old from the city, with underlying comorbid conditions was alsoa victim. The testing of samples from the recommende­d margin of 32,000 per day has reduced as only 30,039 samples were tested in the past 24 hours.

However, officials from the Directorat­e of Public Health and Preventive­Medicine said that the testing is being done as per the guidelines and will bescaled up in the coming weeks. A total of 2,212 more patients were discharged fromsevera­l hospitals across the State after treatment, taking up the total number of recoveries in the State to 47,749.
